Literary Elements in Short Stories
We have discussed that a short story is just like a novel with the same elements: Plot, Characters, Settings, Conflicts, Themes....and more elements we haven't yet discussed. The difference is that a short story is a shortened story.
Becoming a grade level reader means, understanding the different types of writing and reading and being able to manage all of it. It means that readers understand that all reading demands: decoding of new words, understanding of vocabulary, being able to track and keep track of the story, and understanding how the elements of the story help to create a dynamic story that engages the reader.

What is Fiction?
Fiction is prose writing, written or spoken language in its ordinary form, about imagined events and characters. Prose writing differs from poetry in that it does not depend on verses, meters or rhymes for its organization and presentation.
Every fiction story has literary elements, those parts of the story that have to be there for a story to be a story.
A short story is defined as:
"a story with a fully developed theme but significantly shorter and less elaborate than a novel."
That means that to be a short story, you need to have specific parts that are included. They are:
Setting
Theme
Conflict
Characters
Plot
You will visit the site below and read over the page as a team. Then you will each write the definition for each of the elements of fiction in a short story.

Chronological Order-Sequence the BIG IDEAS-Willow story
Chronological Order-Sequence the BIG IDEAS
On Saturday I walked Hopey and Willow. For the first part of the walk, I had Willow in her new Willowmobile. On the way back Willow wanted to walk so I took her out of her Willowmobile. She was on her leash with her walking jacket. We all walked. Willow walked back all on her own, back towards the car in her harness and leash. I was ready to stop there, but Willow wanted to keep going so we did.
We were at the T top of the road when it happened. All of a sudden a car came flying up the road. We had just crossed the T in the road and were on a blind turn so the driver couldn’t see us but I could suddenly hear him. He came up the road way too fast, as they ordinarily do up here.
I rushed and tried to grab Willow and Hopey when all of a sudden, Willow sensed my stress and she backed out of the harness jacket. I manage to stop the car from running all of us over, but Willow took off down the road. I saw her run into the woods. I was panicked. I called to her but she was gone…
The people stopped and I unhitched Hopey from my waist, so now Hopey was running loose dragging the flexi. I tried to find where Willow ran into the woods, and when I got there I saw her. She looked scared. I had to climb up a foot and a half embankment to get to her.She was right there, and I was about to grab her when she started to go further. I grabbed her just in time. Just as the people asked if I needed help. They got out of their car. Hopey, who is not friendly to people, was awesome. I had left her in the road right next to the woods, and she just stayed there with the people. They walked over and grabbed the leashes on the ground. I came out of the woods holding Willow and couldn’t get down the embankment with Willow in my arms.
The man was standing there, so I asked him to take her while I got down the small embankment and out of the woods. I handed him Willow. As he held her, and this is the best part, she peed all over his shoes. He was not an animal person I could tell. But he didn’t drop her. I told them they need to drive slower and that people are walking on that road. I thanked them for helping me. I apologized for her peeing on his sneakers, but was silently happy she did that. I thought, that one thing will teach him a lesson he will always remember.
It's a blind corner on that side of the road, and I should not have risked walking them in that blind spot. It was my fault. Cars come around that bend all the time when I walk Hopey but she always knows what to do and I have always had time to get her on the side of the road. But I should not have risked it with Willow walking and Hopey and the Willowmobile. I had a feeling to end the walk at the car and on a good note, but pushed it. I think my angels were working overtime on that day. Everything worked okay in the end, thankfully. Home sweet home….

READING!!!
http://bit.ly/1JP4PE2
As we begin to wind down on the knot tying and realize that everything in our worlds have a sequence or beginning, middle and end, in this class we need to understand how that can help us understand our reading comprehension and our writing structure.
When we read fiction, we begin at the beginning of the book and move towards the end. Along the way, we find the story and characters who come alive. When a story is written well, we don't want to leave the book. When you connect to the story, you can almost imagine yourself inside of it.
We are spectators , viewers, of the story. We are outside of the story looking in. It's almost as if the story is behind a glass window and we are peering inside to see all that we can see. What's inside? Who will be there? What will happen? Where is the story taking place? Why is this story going in this direction? When is this story taking place?
These are all elements of fictional stories and they make the story, a story.
In non fiction, like your social studies textbook, the features of this type of reading is very different. Here you also have a story, of our country, but it's told through facts and dates, timelines, images, video clips, captions under the images explaining the image, and maps. The Unit heading, titles, and subtitles all work to give you the information BEFORE you even begin reading. They hint at what is to come in the unit, chapters, and sections of the text. They all work together to give you information and deepen your understanding.
All reading is important. All of it allows us to learn more about life and life experiences. We can read and learn and use that knowledge in our lives and life experiences. Don't skip the good stuff! It's ALL good stuff and the door to learning more.....

Knots, Writing specific directions and......Reading/doing the knots from other groups...
We forget sometimes how hard it can be to write step by step directions. We also forget sometimes how hard it can be to follow step by step directions. We may interpret directions differently than how they were imagined when the writer wrote them. How will you do when you try to follow another groups directions? Will the directions they wrote be clear? What should the knot look like?
First, you will watch the video again, and practice creating your knot. Then, with your partner, write step by step directions so others will be able to create your knot. Create your knot, write your step by step directions and take a picture of the completed knot. Can others follow the directions you created? Will they be successful?
Chronological Order-Is the order in which something happens...first, second, third.... Chronological Order-Is the order in which something happens...first, second, third....
chrono- meaning “time,”)
Logic: Order
In your Knot tying, it's the order of the actions you have to take to create the knot. If you do anything out of order, or skip a step, you will not achieve the knot!
